Sermon Notes
- God renews the covenants
- God reintroduces Himself: “I am God Almighty.”
- God commands Abram: “Walk before me and be blameless.”
- Abram responds by falling on his face
- God elaborates on His part of the covenant
- "My covenant is with you.“
- "You shall be the father of a multitude of nations.”
- "No longer shall your name be called Abraham, but your name shall be Abraham.“
- "I will make you exceedingly fruitful.“
- "And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant.“
- "And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God."
- God gives Abraham a new responsibility: circumcision
- God provides further blessings:
- "You shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.“
- "I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her.“
- "As for Ishmael, I have heard you.“
- Abraham’s responses
- “Abraham fell on his face and laughed.”
- “Oh that Ishmael might live before you.”
- But he obeyed anyway.
- How about us?
- Now, like then, faith leads to obedience.
- Now, like then, circumcision of the heart trumps circumcision of the flesh.
- Now, like then, God is a covenant-keeping God.
- Now, unlike then, Jesus is God with us.
- There is a time for falling on your face and a time for getting up on your feet.
- Benediction: Jude 24-25
