Sermon: Jesus and the Sabbath

The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week on which Jews were expected to rest from their regular work.

  1. The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.
  2. "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?"

What should be our attitude toward the Sabbath?

  1. We need to agree on what we mean by "Sabbath."
  2. Do Christians even need to keep the Sabbath?

Since Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath,
since the Sabbath was made for people, and
since the Sabbath points us to the rest that comes from God's salvation...

How should we observe the Sabbath today?

  1. Reevaluate how you are stewarding your time.
  2. Resist the temptation to compare yourself to other people in how you observe the Sabbath.
  3. Remember that the purpose of the Lord's Day is not to "make up" for the bad things we have done the other six days of the week.
  4. Redeem the time by serving the Saviour.
  5. Rest in Christ.

Song of Response: “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death”

Benediction: Isaiah 30:18
